A Climate Action Plan (CAP) is a strategic guide that outlines how a city can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote sustainability, and strengthen its resilience to climate change. It involves setting specific goals, planning actions to achieve them, and preparing for the effects of climate change. Monterey’s CAP will be designed to address the city's unique needs and will help lead the way toward a more sustainable and resilient future.

The City of Monterey’s Climate Action Plan will focus on key areas such as energy efficiency, clean energy, sustainable transportation, and climate change mitigation. The plan aims to reduce emissions while improving the overall quality of life for residents.

To create this plan, we have partnered with Rincon Consultants, a firm with extensive experience in developing Climate Action Plans for cities and counties throughout California. Rincon has created over 80 CAPs and will ensure that Monterey’s plan is specifically designed to meet the city’s needs and comply with state requirements.

We encourage you to get involved and help shape the future of Monterey’s climate action efforts.

  • The selection of GHG reduction measures for the CAP is intended to be an iterative process integrating community input from multiple sources. This community input survey has been developed based on feasibility, constraints, opportunities, existing efforts and projects, and feedback from the community received thus far, as well as GHG reduction best practices that are currently being implemented by other progressive communities within California.
