Local Coastal Program Survey Results

A Local Coastal Program Survey was released from December 1 - 31, 2025, resulting in 162 survey respondents. Thank you to those that participated in the survey!

Highlights of the survey results:

Most Appreciated Monterey's Coast For (Top 4 in order): Scenic Views and Vistas, Recreational Opportunities, Marine and Coastal Wildlife, and Coastal Access.

Issues or Concerns in the Coastal Zone That Need to be Addressed (Top 3 in order): Storm and Disaster Readiness, Sea Level Rise Planning and Adaptation, Coastal and Biological Resources.

Land Use Types to Expand or Add to the Coastal Zone (Top 3): overwhelmingly Parks and Open Space (47%) followed by Coastal Dependent Uses (19%), and Restaurants (12%).

Coastal Access Amenities or Methods Preferred (Top 2 of 6): Natural Pathways (31%) and Boardwalks over Dunes (29%), followed by Stairs (14%) and Decks Adjacent to the Ocean (11%).

Type of Parking To Add or Expand to the Coastal Zone: Bike Lockers/Bike Racks (42%), Vehicle Parking (38%), and Other (20%).

Concern with Sea Level Rise along the City's Coastline on a Scale of 1 to 10 (10 being most concerned), 26.5% responded with a concern scale of 10, while 16.7% of respondents responded with a concern scale of 7, and 15.4% a concern scale of 8.

Impacts Most Concerned About (ranked/top 3): Increased Coastal Erosion (1st), Ecological/Habitat Impacts (2nd), Loss of Infrastructure (3rd).
